A new cartoon every Friday, plus special days!

Just Joking

“Did you hear the one about…???”

That’s right folks, it is International Joke Day! And I’m really, really glad you are here, reading this, because everyone of us could use more humor nowadays to keep stress at bay and bring more balance to a world that desperately needs it.

This holiday is believed to have started in 1994 by author Wayne Reinagel to promote his joke books. He chose July 1st because it is the halfway point in a year.

Now don’t confuse this day with April Fools Day. The two are very different. Rather than pulling pranks and practical jokes, International Joke Day is about making your best friend grin, sharing some laughs on social media or paying tribute to some stand-up comics that have put you in stitches for years.

Here are my top three:

Lucille Ball:

I LOVE LUCY! I used to collect Lucy stuff. Clocks, cookie jars, mugs, blankets…you name it, if I ever came across a Lucy memento, I had to have it. I know, I know, history tells us that she had her moments off the stage or screen, but don’t we all. The woman was a comic genius, and today I salute her.

David Sedaris:

If you like to read, you should read everything Dave Sedaris has ever written. If you like to read funny stuff, then you probably already have. Sedaris is a master of penned wit and most would agree that he is the funniest writer working today. If I ever get down or sad, I listen to Sedaris. See what you think of this excerpt from his tale about his FitBit.

Robin Williams:

Robin Williams is one of those performers that only comes around once in a lifetime. As a brilliant comedian and talented actor, there was nothing that he couldn’t do. I miss him and pay tribute to his prodigy.

Where would any of us be without jokes and laughter to brighten our spirits?

Today, tell a joke, act crazy, celebrate your favorite funny person, and don’t forget to smile, Wimpy Girl, smile!

I got my first Jokes & Riddles book from Mrs. Thompson when she came to visit me in the hospital-I gave it away finally, about 5 years ago-I still use my favorite joke from it-How do you make a handkerchief dance? Put a little boogie in it!
