Happy New Year

Welcome to the New Year! A clean slate. A fresh page. An opportunity to switch things around–shake things up.

As you wave goodbye to the old and ring in the new, you don’t want to go in swinging without a plan. Do you?

Didn’t think so.

This week about 100 million Americans will venture down a well-traveled path paved with bold and sometimes hastily conceived New Year’s resolutions.

According to a study done at University of Scranton, the following shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on:

past the first week: 75%

past 2 weeks: 71%

after one month: 64%

 after 6 months: 46%.

Go figure.

Resolution Enthusiasm

The word enthusiasm is derived from the Greek word “entheos” which means “God within” or “guidance within.” So, basically, as we set our new year’s resolves, it’s important to ask ourselves exactly what is it that we’re excited about. From there we can focus an action plan that is solid and not laden with excuses.

According to YouGov, THE MOST POPULAR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2022 are:

So if you are like me, you have probably picked a few of the above for this year’s focus.

Here’s a few tips to make them happen:

LISTEN TO YOUR GUT — If you’re feeling dissatisfied, bored or unhappy, that’s a sure sign that a change is in order. We all need to be challenged in order to thrive and enjoy the excitement that life offers.

KEEP IT REALISTIC — It might not be realistic to lose 50 pounds in the first few months of the year, but drinking two liters of water a day (for example) is a more realistic start. Once you’ve achieved some of the smaller goals you can work on more to help you achieve the bigger objectives.

GET SPECIFIC — A resolution to simply “lose weight” or “exercise more” with no game plan won’t cut it.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY ABOUT YOUR GOALS — When the people around you know what you’re working toward they can support you. It also makes you more accountable to yourself when you’ve told someone else.

DON’T CRUMBLE AT SETBACKS — When you digress into the old behavior step back and look at the factors that made you relapse, then think of ways to avoid it from happening again.

CELEBRATE WHEN YOU SUCCEED — Achieving your goals is a time to celebrate and enjoy your new confidence in living — a time to truly be excited!

Reality Check

Frankly, I’m a “big time” procrastinator, so I’m preaching to myself with the above suggestions.

Also, as far as the popular resolutions, don’t look to me for financial or spiritual advice. But I do know a few things about travel (see Barefoot Diary), and having owned a gym and worked in the fitness industry, I feel confident about passing on things that have helped me lose weight and exercise more. The next few articles will focus on weight loss, nutrition and exercise.

The sleep thing, well, at age 64 I still haven’t figured out the key to sleeping 8 continuous hours. I’m open to suggestions.

So, gulp, as the ball dropped on a new year and decade, her are my personal resolutions:

"May the next year find your waistline slimmer, your wallet fatter, your cholesterol lower, and your tolerance level higher."
