A new cartoon every Friday, plus special days!

Asparagus Tips

Leafy Laffs is a collection of Wimpy Girl cartoons intended to be the spoonful of laughter to help the vegetables go down.  Some of them are fruity, corny, and every now and then a pancake, egg or bagel may be invited to the stage. All are created to remind us all to make healthy eating choices. Eat your heart out Popeye!

Today is National Asparagus Day!

May 24, 2022 Celebrated each year on this day

So, Let’s Discuss Asparagus

Did you know that asparagus is a member of the lily family?

The name asparagus comes from the Greeks and meant “sprout” or “shoot. Way before humankind knew anything about the benefits of super foods (like about 2000 years ago), folks in the Mediterranean area prized asparagus stalks because of their unique texture, as well as their medicinal and aphrodisiacal benefits. Oh really???

Asparagus grows in sandy soil, and can grow up to 10 inches in a 24-hour period.  And it comes in 3 colors: green, white and purple. White is probably the rarest of the three because it is so delicate, making it difficult to harvest. Purple asparagus is supposedly much smaller, but I have to admit, I’ve never seen a purple asparagus.

Nutri-toon Details

Asparagus is one of the most nutritious veggies you can eat. It’s high in folic acid and potassium, fiber, thiamin and vitamins A, B6 and C.

It can be eaten raw (supposedly – I’ve never done it) or cooked. It’s a quickie as far as cooking goes. The ancient Greeks and Romans used it for bee stings and toothaches, and more recently it’s been touted to cure hangovers. Go figure.

I guess nowadays asparagus spears would be considered “influencers” because of their plethora of tips…wink, wink!

How long has it been since you’ve had a few spears? For this Wimpy Girl, too long!

It was Senator Gaylord Nelson who, in the 1960s, brought awareness of the environment and keeping it clean. He proposed National Earth Day in 1970 and on April 22nd, 20 million Americans took to the street in support of a clean environment and to protest harmful environment practices. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created as a result.

As a runner/walker, there is a lot you can do to help Mother Nature to protect and clean up our planet.

1. Go Plogging
In essence, plogging is picking up trash and waste while you are out on your run or walk. Plogging is actually a Swedish word, combining the words, plocko upp (pick up) and jogga (jog).

2. Support Companies that are Environmentally Friendly
It takes everyone doing their part to make a difference. Companies that have made cleaning the planet part of their mission include Adidas, Brooks, Ikea, Unilever, and Patagonia lead the list.

3. Go Plastic-less
Plastic is the one of the hugest threats to our oceans. Making a few simple changes can make your plastic footprint smaller. Things like bringing your own grocery bags while shopping, refusing to use plastic straws and cutlery, bringing your own water bottle and coffee cup, and never, ever using glitter are a few ways to show Mother Nature you care.

4. Walk or Bike, Rather than Using the Car
This is a no-brainer!

5. Plant a New Tree Each Year

6. Save Energy
Save energy in your home by turning off lights and fans and unplugging devices that aren’t being used.

Check out EarthDay.org for more active projects and groups to make each April 22nd, better than the last.
